The Walker's Pond Water Conservation Society is an association of lake-shore owners and others, interested in the welfare of Conway Lake. It takes its name from the one given the pond by the early settlers and it has been in existence since 1960. We are proud that the lake ranks among the best in the state for overall water quality and the Society is committed to maintaining that quality. Our Activities include: 1. Working with the Freshwater Biology Group of UNH in their Lake Lay Monitoring Program. This important ongoing study was devised by UNH, to keep watch on the health of lakes around the state. Our Society has participated in it for many years and has, through weekly tests during the summer, accumulated as impressive fund of information which is valuable in spotting changes, trends and trouble sources. 2. Supporting the Loon Preservation Committee, keeping tabs on our local loon population, and participating in the statewide loon count in July. 3. Donating the fourteen acres of land, adjacent to the dam, to the Town. The Conservation Commission has created beautiful trials through this wooded piece and made it available to the public. 4. Owning an island in the lake under a conservation easement, which guarantees its protection in a natural state. 5. Being a member of the NH Lakes Association which keeps abreast of lake problems, monitors bills introduced in the Legislature, and issues alerts when important matters are coming up for public hearing. 6. Working with our patrolman and "watch-dogging" boating activities, in an effort to keep the lake safe for all users. 7. Keeping abreast of the problems confronting our lake like the current alarming spread, in lakes around the state, of the noxious weed, Milfoil, and educating users of the lake about them. The Society holds an annual meeting every August, which serves as an opportunity for members to meet each other, offer suggestions, sound complaints, talk over common problems, and hold elections. |
